From pioneers to presidents, Independence played a key role in shaping our nation's future. Minutes east of Kansas City, it offers several heritage attractions within a short distance of the downtown historic square. Home to President Harry Truman and the beginning of the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails, it features 16 heritage attractions including the Harry S. Truman Museum and Library, Truman Home, Victorian mansions, the National Frontier Trails Museum, 1859 Jail and Marshal's Home, covered wagon rides, plus a variety of religious sites including the Mormon Visitors Center and Community of Christ World Headquarters. Don't forget the wonderful shopping, antiques, great restaurants, numerous hotels, motels and B&Bs, plus a variety of outdoor activities including golf, tennis, parks, walking trails and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. Midwest Genealogy Center has state-of-the-art research areas and computer labs. The Silverstein Eye Center Arena home to the Missouri Mavericks Central Hockey League team opened November 2009. The facility is available for tradeshows, concerts, conventions and other events. During the summer, visit the Adventure Oasis family water park featuring three water slides, a lazy river, interactive family pool and lap pool. Independence is a perfect destination for a holiday getaway. All sites participate in more than 25 events in the "Spirit of Christmas Past" from Thanksgiving to New Year's. The Vaile Mansion, Bingham-Waggoner Estate and 1859 Marshal's Home offer a special holiday tour package.
